All addiction is, is a maladaptive coping skill. If we look at drugs and alcohol, which people will readily admit that you can be addicted to – the hard part isnt the physical part. Thats over in 5 days. The hard part is the emotional part. Just as in food addiction. So fine, if you say there is no “food addiction” than I think we need to redefine the word addiction. Cuz Ive been there, and it exists in me just as drug and alcohol addiction (emotional not physical) exists in my clients.

hypothyroidism, which added slightly to the weight gain, but not enough I’m going to blame it all on that. Mine was psychological, but when you think about it, some of the same chemicals that are added to cigarettes are added to foods to make them more addicting. They do mess with chemical levels in the brain, but they can be kicked just like cigarrettes. Just have to take it one day at a time. :)

I do believe that people can become addicted to food, but I kinda lean toward there being different kinds of addictions, such as chemical addictions and psychological addictions. I quick smoking a few years ago, was lagging in energy, and started eating sweets alot which in turn raised my serotonin levels, and gave me pleasure. I led myself to believe that this could be the only way I would survive, (psychological), instead of getting checked out which I did later and found out I had…

it’s hard for me to imagine to be bored – ever! I think, feeling bored means to feel a deprivation of a need of … e.g. friends, conversation, love, inner satisfaction, success … so, this deprivation causes a certain stress level, that your mind has to deal with. I usually crave for sweets, when I’m sitting at my computer, knowing I will have to spend a long time working on that thing, that will not lead to success anyway ….

Discussions of addiction always seem to center around what the person is addicted to.

I think it is possible that some people simply have an addictive type personality. If you took away the booze or whatever, they would just find something else like food, video games or weird religious cults to get a dependence upon.

Again, such personalities might be innate, or as your dad suggests, be rooted in suppression of stresses.

Most of what we consume is not “food” it’s scientifcally-manipulated, products developed and tested by men in lab coats, specifically engineered to make us crave and over-indulge despite the known repercussions. Isn’t that the definition of an addictive drug? David Kessler’s book, The End Of Overeating, explains this thoroughly. “Foods high in fat, salt and sugar alter the brain’s chemistry in ways that compel people to overeat.” I believe food is absolutely an a addictive substance to abuse.

Read Explaining colours to a blind man. Not only will it enlighten many as to what living with a mental illness and an eating disorder is like, it also gives comfort to those sufferers who think there is no hope and that they are alone. It is very informative, sometimes shocking but also very funny in parts. All in all, a good read and highly recommended.

i think food obsession is mistaken for food addiction.

  • wishiremembered says:

Yes, i do very much believe that food addiction exists. Not just from emotional stress but also from a physioligical standpoint in the certain types of food being consumed.
